That’s a Good Question!

I have slowly become sensitive to a variety of different foods that I used to be able to eat. Could this be due to Adrenal Fatigue? If I continue to ignore my AF, is it possible to become sensitive to an even bigger variety of foods? Do people generally start losing that sensitivity as their adrenals start to improve?

Allergic (food or chemicals or sensitivities) and asthma reactions usually have strong adrenal components. Many allergies involve the release of histamine and other pro-inflammatory substances. The body's response is to produce cortisol, a strong anti-inflammatory hormone. The weaker the adrenals, the higher the frequency of allergies. This is because the more histamine is released, the more cortisol it takes to control the inflammatory response the harder the adrenals have to work to produce more cortisol. When the adrenals are eventually exhausted, cortisol output is compromised, allowing unopposed histamine to inflame the bodily tissues more. This vicious cycle can lead to progressively deepening adrenal exhaustion and producing more severe allergic reactions.

  • O.A.T. Axis Imbalance

    The endocrine system is made up of eight different glands located strategically throughout the body. Three of the most important ones for females are the ovaries, adrenals, and the thyroid gland.

    Control over the adrenal and ovarian systems start at the hypothalamus. Specifically, the adrenal glands are regulated through the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. Ovarian hormones are regulated through the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis. Each of the end organs (adrenals, thyroid, and ovaries) produces a variety of hormones that further exert their effects on the rest of the body. In addition, each of the end organs is tied into other organ systems hormonally via a series of network or axis.

    One such intricate hormonal axis ties in the adrenals, thyroid and the ovaries. This axis is called the Ovarian Adrenal Thyroid (OAT) axis. What happens to one organ will affect the other organs physiologically, clinically or sub-clinically. These three organs are therefore intimately co-dependent hormonally on each other for optimal function. If the adrenal glands are weak, there is often concurrent thyroid malfunction and menstrual cycle irregularity. Similarly, an under-active thyroid often makes adrenal fatigue worse off. Lastly, those who suffer from ovarian hormonal imbalance such as estrogen dominance often exacerbate any pre-existing sub-clinical hypothyroidism.

  • Why Conventional Medicine Rejects Adrenal Fatigue

    Adrenal Fatigue is a term applied to a collection of nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, joint pain, insomnia, hypoglycemia, depression, nervousness, sleep disturbances and digestive problems presenting in an otherwise healthy person with normal laboratory test results. Over 50 percent of adults suffer from Adrenal Fatigue at one point or another in their adult life. Most recover without knowing they had Adrenal Fatigue, but a minority fail to recover, and a small number continue to worsen. In its worst form, a person can be bedridden and incapacitated. The term often shows up in popular health books and on alternative medicine websites. An Internet search of the words "Adrenal Fatigue" yield over 2.4 million results, with search threads ranging from the Mayo Clinic to the Hormone Foundation and alternative health forums. What is clear is that to the vast majority of conventional physicians, other than the forward-thinking ones, this condition does not exist and is not real. Yet to the vast majority of sufferers, this condition is very real and indeed, can be quite debilitating.

    How is it possible that such a widespread dysfunction that generates so much on-going interest among the public be rebuked by many of the world's most brilliant and well-trained physicians? How does one explain the cognitive dissonance among most conventional physicians' assessment that Adrenal Fatigue does not exist, while the real experience of many sufferers is that of incapacitation and the inability to hold down a job?
