New research shows that exposure to folic acid antagonists while pregnant can lead to serious conditions. These conditions include placental abruption, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction or death.
Folic acid antagonists are drugs that are used to treat disorders such as hypertension and epilepsy. There is a big risk of being exposed to these medications by accident while pregnant, as around fifty percent of the pregnancies in industrialized countries are not planned.
Nearly 15,000 women who had taken folic acid antagonists a year before giving birth were compared to nearly 60,000 women who did not take any folic acid antagonist drugs. A slightly higher risk of bad pregnancies was found in the medicated mothers.
Researchers concluded by suggesting a reclassification of some folic acid antagonists. Increasing folic acid supplementation was also recommended during pregnancy.
