Breasts may now have a new maker for metastatic breast cancer. Its name? Menainv. Menainv is a newly identified protein the may contribute to the spread of breast cancer, making it a potential maker for metastatic breast cancer.

Early markers have been hard to find for metastatic breast cancer up until now. researchers identified the protein Menainv present in only the invasive cells inside a breast tumor.

Menainv cells move from surrounding tissue and procede to the blood vessels. Nonmotile breast cell don’t have Menainv. These are also known as resident cells.

It was also found that Menainv cells are less responsive to newer forms of breast cancer treatments that inhibit epidermal growth factor receptors.
