A new study shows that eating a Mediterranean style diet may help with decreasing metabolic syndrome. A Mediterranean style diet is low in dairy, meat, fat, and junk food. It is high in nuts, legumes, fish, olive oil, and wine. These ingredients are high in beta-carotene, tocopherols, polyphenols, vitamin C, and other essential minerals.
1,224 participants with high risk for cardiovascular disease between the ages of 55 and 80 were randomly assigned to one of three groups: group 1 received advice on a low fat diet, group 2received advice on the Mediterranean diet and received 1 liter of virgin olive oil per week, group 3 received advice on the Mediterranean diet and received 30 grams of mixed nuts per day. Participants were then evaluated a year later.
Results show that metabolic syndrome was reduced by 13.7% in group 3, 6.7% in group 2, and 2% in group 1. However, changes in body weight were not found. Triglyceride and blood pressure levels dropped significantly in the group 3 though.
