Women Unaware Of Heart Attacks

Analyzed data from the American Heart Association has shown that while heart attack kills equal numbers of men and women in the hospital, women suffering from a severe heart attack known as ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) were twice as likely to pass in the first 24 hours of hospitalization as men suffering from the same attack.

Research has shown that recommended treatment usually given by health care professionals were usually delayed or underused in women. For example, women were 14% less likely to receive early aspirin than men. They were also 13% less likely to receive surgery within 90 minutes of admission.

A possible reason for this is that physicians may not always interpret neck and back pain in women as classic heart attack symptoms. It is important to educate women on the risks of heart attack disease and to keep track of important numbers such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index.
