New research shows that obesity and a sedentary life style may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Researchers surveyed 92 women with a history of breast cancer. The majority of this group was overweight. 37% of the participants were obese. What is startling is that most of the participants knew that obesity was a breast cancer risk factor. What's more, few women were getting enough exercise, the researchers report in the journal International Seminars in Surgical Oncology. Only 15% of the postmenopausal women in the study reported exercising at least 4 hours per week.

Excess fat raises the estrogen levels in the body and fuels the growth of breast tumors. Exercising on a regular basis can help decrease the risk. Exercise is thought to decrease weight and thus decrease the risk of developing breast cancer. There is not much information on this theory yet though.
