New research is showing that vigorous exercise may help prevent vision loss. In America, over half the people over 65 years suffer from cataracts. Some risk factors for cataracts are sunlight exposure and diabetes. Age related macular degeneration is the greatest cause of irreversible vision loss in older white Americans.

Research observed 31,000 runners for 7 plus years and found that running reduced the risk of macular degeneration with age as well as cataracts. It was found that men who ran more than 6 miles a day had a 35% lower risk of developing cataracts as compared to men who ran less than 1.4 miles a day. There weren't enough women who reported developing cataracts to conduct a study. Another study found that funning between 1.2 and 2.4 miles a day resulted in a 19% lower chance of age related macular degeneration.

This amount of running goes beyond the current health recommendations for physical activity. The reason for the connection between exercise and risk prevention is unknown.
