Have trouble handling the roller coaster financial market? Lost a lot during the current global economic downturn? New research is showing that you may have your genes to thank for that. Researchers found clear links between 2 genes and peoples willingness to gamble with money.

These genes are involved with dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter linked with movement and taking risks. Serotonins is a also a neurtransmitter. It is involved in controlling mood. People tend to invest more riskily in potentially more lucrative proposition if they possess the "high-risk" dopamine gene. The dopamine gene DRD4 saw 25% more risky investments than people with the normal gene version. People with the “high anxiety” serotonin gene are more likely to manage their money more carefully. The serotonin gene, H-HTTLPR saw a 28% decrease in money invested in risky investments as compared to people with the non-anxious version of serotonin.

About 1/3 of the participants who took a saliva test and were given money to see what they would invest on possessed the high-risk dopamine gene. Another 1/3 possessed the high-anxiety serotonin gene. No participant had both genes.
