Enzyme, acyl COA: diacylglycerol acyltransferase, also known as DGAT1, has now found a new use. Previously associated with fat synthesis in the body, it is now also discovered to promote healthy hair and skin. Researchers found that mice with the DGAT1 enzyme deleted had much higher levels of retinoic acid (RA) in their skin. This resulted in hair loss. It was also found that mice lacking DGAT1 were leaner and more resistant to diet-induced obesity. They were also found to be more sensitive to insulin and leptin. RA can be used to treat skin disorders such as psoriasis and acne. Although it comes from vitamin A, it is fairly toxic and must be controlled carefully. Researchers believe that this finding may hold potential treatments for skin or hair disorders. SOURCES: Journal of Biological Chemistry, 2009 Stress Can Cause Skin Disease Old Enzyme New Use
