Decreasing your salt intake may be the key to lowering blood pressure for people with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome affects 1 in 5 people and causes sensitivity to salt intake. Researchers studied close to 2,000 participants who were given a diet low in sodium for seven days. This was then followed by a diet high in sodium for another seven days. Their blood pressures were measured 4 times during each of the seven day periods as well as before the start of the experiment. Results found 283 participants with Metabolic Syndrome. All of the patients were more sensitive to changes in salt intake. The more risk factors (abdominal obesity, raised blood pressure, high triglyceride concentration, low HDL cholesterol or high glucose) a patient had, the more sensitive they were to changes in salt intake. Researchers believe that sodium intake can be a very important component to keeping blood pressure in check for patients with metabolic syndrome.
