The most prevalent cause of vision loss in older aged Americans is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Previously, the only known method of prevention was to avoid smoking. However, a new study shows that women taking a combination of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid had a decreased risk of developing AMD.

Close to 5,500 women over the age of 40 participated in the clinical trial. Results showed that patients who took that supplements had a 34% lower chance of developing any sort of AMD. They also had a 41% lower risk of developing visually significant AMD. Visually significant AMD is defined as a visual acuity of 20/30 or worse.

Researchers believe that vitamin B and folic acid have serious benefits in AMD prevention and is the only other known way to prevent AMD other than smoking.
