Many women are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) after discontinuing hormone therapy of menopause. Researchers looked at 563 women who filled out a questionnaire, out of which 45% used CAM for menopausal symptom relief. Among these women, 27% used vitamin and calcium supplements, 21% reported the use of black cohosh, and 19% turned to soy supplements and food to relieve symptoms. CAM users were found to typically be between the ages of 40 and 50 with less than 5 years after menopause. Reporting CAM use to healthcare providers is very important as safety and efficiency vary for each type. Other CAM therapies are medication, evening primrose oil, homeopathic treatments, red clover, and blood pressure lowering medication.
