Cognitive Behavior Therapy Helps With Anxiety

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) may help older adults (over the age of 60) with anxiety. CBT includes relaxation training, problem-solving exercises, and behavioral sleep management among other tools. It is thought that more than 7% of older people suffer from generalized anxiety disorder. Medication is often used to treat this disorder, but not all older adults like to take these due to the side effects, such as sedation.

Researchers studied 134 people whose average age was 67. All the participants were being treated for anxiety. Half the participants then underwent CBT for up to 10 sessions over a period of 3 months. The other half continued standard primary care. Results showed that participants who received CBT had fewer depressive symptoms and generally improved mental health.

Researchers believe that cognitive therapy is a good alternative treatment to taking medications, but the 2 treatments are not mutually exclusive. No study has been done to compare the use of medication against CBT.
