High Vitamin D Levels Associated With Weight Loss

A new study has shown that Vitamin D levels when starting a diet are linked to weight loss success. Low levels of Vitamin D is connected to obesity, but might not be the cause of it.

In order to see if Vitamin D levels before starting a low calorie diet affect weight loss, the researchers observed 38 obese people. They measured their vitamin D levels prior and subsequent to being on a diet where participants had to eat 750 calories fewer daily than their normal needs for 11 weeks.

Results showed that there was a linear connection between high vitamin D levels at pre-diet phase and weight loss during the experiment. For every 1-ng/mL increase in 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, the precursor form of Vitamin D, ½ lb (0.198kg) more weight is lost. For every 1-ng/mL increase in the active and hormonal form of vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxycholeacalciferol), ¼ lb (0.107kg) more weight is lost. Higher baseline vitamin D levels also anticipated larger loss of abdominal fat.

However, more research is needed to confirm if Vitamin D supplementation indeed helps people lose weight on calorie restriction diets.
