Two new studies show that eating and exercising actually have concrete benefits. A definite relationship was found between healthy lifestyle factors and the risk of heart failure. The two groups focused on cardiovascular risk: Nurses Health Study observed 83,882 women over 14 years and Physicians Health Study observed 20,900 men over 23 years.
A lifestyle factor that really influenced heart disease was adiposity. Overweight or obese men had a heart failure risk of 17% compared to normal mens 11%. Exercise also came up as an important factor. 11% of the men who exercised five or more times a week received heart problems compared to 14% for those who did not exercise.
The women study correlated high blood pressure and lifestyle factors. Women who followed the advice on the factors had a great percent lower incidence of blood pressure than those who did not follow the rules. As in the male study, obesity played a big part in increasing risk. BMI alone was the most powerful predictor of hypertension. These two studies are implying strongly that a healthy lifestyle prevents a number of illnesses.
