Predictor Found For Severe Osteoarthritis
Severe osteoarthritis and replacement of hip or knee joints can now be predicted by checking levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1). This particular protein is expressed in cartilage and connective tissues.
A study of 912 Italians, 60 of whom had severe osteoarthritis that led to a knee or hip replacement, found that patients who started with high amounts of VCAM-1 were most likely to undergo joint replacement.
This study is the first to find a laboratory biomarker, which is an early diagnosis of a disease before clinical symptoms appear, for severe osteoarthritis risk. Understanding the prediction can help in identifying people who would benefit from exercise, strength training, and weight loss.
