Lose Weight Through Yoga

A new study now shows that exercising through yoga can help reduce waistline. The 15,500 healthy, middle-aged men and women studied found that regular yoga practice (30 minutes once a week) correlated to mindful eating (i.e. a higher sensitivity to hunger and satiety). Thus, people who ate mindfully were less likely to be obese. This finding is especially true for people who are already overweight.

Yoga’s impact on weight change was calculated without influence of other factors like diet or other types of exercise. Most people ages 45-55 usually gain about 0.5 kg a year due to decreasing energy needs yet maintaining the same calorie intake. Those who did yoga, however, gained around three fewer pounds compared to those who did not practice yoga at least 30 minutes once a week for four or more years.

Those who practiced yoga consistently for ten years ended up losing five pounds compared to gaining 14 pounds for those who didn’t do yoga. Experts say that yoga’s benefits have more to do with heightened body awareness than the physical activity itself.
