Fruits And Vegetables Might Stop Lymphoma
A new study now says that consuming more antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables might decrease the risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Taking Vitamin C, proanthocyanidins, and alpha-carotene is linked with reducing that risk by 22, 30, and 29%. The yellow/orange and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli were among the best at reducing the risk. Experts also noted that these benefits would mostly come from diet rather than supplements.
Over 50,000 patients are diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) in the US every year. This cancer starts off in the lymphatic system and encompasses around 29 different forms of lymphoma.
In the study, around 35,000 women aged 55-69 were studied. After twenty years of observation, results showed that taking around 7 servings daily of fruit and vegetables linked to having a 31% reduction in NHL risk compared to those who took less than 3 servings a day. Increased manganese consumption through diet helped decrease risk by 40%. Manganese can be found in nuts, leafy vegetables, and whole grains.
