Vitamin B Relieves Migraines

More than 300 million people in the world suffer from migraines. Women also complain to have twice as many headaches than men do. These symptoms could follow after light flashes, blind spots, anxiety, or tingling sensations in the arms or legs. Migraines happen when there is a throbbing feeling on any side of the head. Symptoms that are severe can last between 4 to 72 hours.

New Australian research now shows that Vitamin B and folic acid can decrease severity and frequency of migraines. Taking 25mg of vitamin B6, 400 micrograms of B12, and 2mg of folic acid resulted in twice the reduction of migraine disability.

The study by Genomics Research Centre (GRC) found that MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) was the gene that made people vulnerable to migraine attacks due to mutation or dysfunction to C677T gene. This change shows the way to increased levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is linked to heart diseases and stroke. Therefore, the results showed that folic acid combined with B6 and B12 lowered plasma homocysteine levels and produced better health in patients.
