Osteoporosis In Asians
An Audit report done by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has found a major increase in fractures and osteoporosis throughout Asia. Incidences of hip fractures has doubled or tripled over the past 30 years. Moreover, Asia by 2050 would have half of the world’s fractures because of escalating longevity and growing populations.
Osteoporosis and fractures have been fatally underestimated. The myth that osteoporosis is rare in Asia as compared to Western countries has now been uncovered. Partly responsible for great elevation in osteoporosis is the widespread low calcium intake and vitamin D deficiency. Even though the countries recommend taking 1000-1300mg/day of calcium for adults, most Asian adults only take around 450mg/day.
