Stress Can Cause Skin Disease

A new study done by the University of New South Wales in Australia has found that stress affects skin health. Women aged 22-27 were surveyed three times regarding their physical and mental health. On being asked about the number of times they had encountered skin troubles, the women reported and occurrence of at least 23.9%.

Researchers also connected the link between stress or depression symptoms with skin difficulties. However, anxiety was not one of the factors affecting skin health. The study showed that for every 1-unit increase in the stress score, skin problems would increase by a factor of 1.427 and the depression score would increase by a factor of 1.016.

The results imply that psychological morbidity like stress and depression can very well influence or cause skin disease. This leads to the possibility of using psychological therapies as well as stress management therapies to help patients prevent and manage skin problems.
