A new research finds that seniors who take daily doses (700-100 IU) of Vitamin D cut risks of falling. Based on eight studies done on around 2,400 elderly people over 65, fall prevention was only notably reduced with doses more than 700 IU. Vitamin D builds bone health and increases balance and strength.
Each year, 33% of those 65 and older, and 50% of those above 50, fall at least once. Around 6% of these falls result in a fracture, and 9% might entail a tip to the emergency room. Many elderly people who fall result in nursing homes. That is why it is important to try to prevent falls.
Though the Institute of Medicine recommends taking 400 to 600 IU of Vitamin D a day, experts say that taking 700 to 1000 IU of vitamin D daily is a safer and cheaper way to prevent falls. The effect of taking Vitamin D daily kicks in after a few months and is held over years.
