The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the leading cause of death worldwide is coronary heart disease, and to be mores specific, high blood pressure. 75% of the hear disease cases come from 8 risk factors: tobacco use, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, high blood glucose, high cholesterol, high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, and physical inactivity. This same report found that 71% of lung cancer deaths originate from tobacco smoking.
A quarter of the 60 million premature deaths each year are due to alcohol, unsafe sex, poor childhood nutrition, high blood pressure, and bad sanitation/hygiene. Even though malnutrition is a huge risk for those in underdeveloped countries, obesity is yet a bigger risk in prosperous countries-leading to a situation in which being overweight causes more deaths than being underweight.
The world's top mortality risks are high blood pressure (13% of deaths), use of tobacco (9%), high blood glucose (6%), physical inactivity (6%), and obesity (5%). These risk factors increased the risk of developing chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
