A new study finds that women with dense breasts can increase their risks for breast cancer recurrence by up to 40%. Risk can not only increase risk of return of cancer, but also after lumpectomy. Experts assert that the breast tissue composition surrounding the breast cancer can help predict whether the breast cancer will recur or not after surgery.
The study over 10 years showed that the women with the densest breasts category had 21% recurrence compared to 5% for the women in the lowest category. For the patients who did not receive radiation, cancer recurred in 40% of the women in the highest category and zero for the women with lowest density breasts.
Researchers advise women with high-density tissues in the breasts to receive radiation because they are at a higher risk of the breast cancer returning after surgery.
