Heart Disease From Vitamin D Deficiency

The American Heart Association's Scientific Conference in Orlando, Florida presented a new study that linked insufficient intake of Vitamin D to heart disease, stroke, and death. Vitamin D is important in cardiovascular health, cognitive health, bone health, immune health, and cancer protection. It helps regulate important body functions such as inflammation, blood pressure, and glucose control-all which are related to heart disease.

The study consisted of 27,686 people 50 years and older who had no history of heart disease. The participants were divided into three groups based on their vitamin D levels- normal (over 30 nanograms per milliliter), low (15-30 ng/ml), or very low (less than 15 ng/ml). The scientists then observed if there was development of heart disease in each group. Results showed that those in the low levels of Vitamin D were 45% more likely to develop coronary artery disease, 77% more likely to die, 78% more likely to have a stroke, and 200% more likely to suffer from heart failure compared to those with normal Vitamin D levels.

Since cardiovascular diseases are United States' number one killer, this study lends support to the claim that Vitamin D can decrease the risk of developing heart disease.
