In a study mentioned in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, high consumption of fat from red meat and dairy products has been connected to elevated risks of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is fatal in 95% of cases. Smoking and obesity are some of the known risk factors, and now experts are trying to add intake of animal fats to the list.
In the study, 500,000 people filled out food frequency questionnaires in 1995 and 1996 and were then followed for six years. A number of health issues were tracked; one of them being pancreatic cancer. After the time period, 1,337 participants, 865 men and 472 women, were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The study results showed positive linkage between pancreatic cancer and total, monosaturated, and saturated fat intake from dairy and read meat food sources. Not only does higher red meat consumption affect pancreatic cancer, it also contributes to other health problems like heart disease, macular degeneration, other cancers, and premature death. On the other hand, eating fruits, vegetables, and fibre was linked to longer life and lower rates of heart disease.
