Carotenoids Help Eye Health
A study published by the Institute of Food Technologists have found that two oxygenated carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin (found in kale and spinach), can improve eye health. Carotenoids are usually found in green leafy vegetables and colored fruits. Lutein and zeaxanthin play an important role in human vision by having a positive impact on the retina.
These yellow intraocular pigments have been suggested to improve visual performance by absorbing light scattered both within, by diminishing glare, and outside of the eye. This results in widening visual range by absorbing blue light scattered in the atmosphere and by improving spatial vision through enhancing contrast and reducing chromatic blur. These pigments can also protect the retina and lens and slow down age-related eye disease like cataracts and macular degeneration.
Therefore, make sure to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables if you want to increase your visual performance.
