New study from Japan shows that consuming more folate might reduce the symptoms of depression in men, but not in women. Those with the highest blood levels of folate had 50% less chance of developing depressive symptoms compared to those with the lowest levels. In addition, higher levels of the amino acid homocysteine was correlated with an increase in depressive symptoms risk in men.
The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that in 20 years time, depression will be the biggest health problem in the world. It puts depression as the number one reason that causes disability worldwide, with around 120 million people affects.
Folate, one of the B vitamins, is found naturally in some foods, including leafy vegetables, beans, citrus fruits and whole grains. Folic acid, on the other hand, is the bioavailble, synthetic form of the vitamin used in fortification programmes and supplements. Researchers reported that folic acid supplements can help lower the prevalence of depressive symptoms and help those who are suffering from depression.
