People with psychopathy, a form of psychological personality disorder, usually have difficulty controlling impulses and manipulative behaviors. They are characterized by a missing conscience. They can seem charming, however, all their smiles are usually for self-gratification at the expense of others. They understand the right and wrong of society, but do not sympathize with feelings of suffering, elation, or love. A new study finds that psychopaths have mental damage comparable to those with harmed frontal lobes of their brain. Some personality traits of psychopaths are cruelty and lack of sympathy or regret. The study analyzed the emotional and cognitive traits and abilities of psychopaths, patients with damage to the frontal lobe, patients with damage to areas in the brain other than the frontal lobe, and healthy people. Results showed that the impairment patterns in the psychopaths was almost the same as those who had frontal lobe damage. The researchers theorized that the root cause of the behavioral troubles in psychopaths might come from the dysfunctional frontal lobes.
