Consuming processed meats like bacon, salami, hotdogs, and sausages do not only raise heart disease, but also diabetes. Unprocessed beef, pork, and lamb, on the other hand, do not affect risks of either diabetes or heart attacks. The main causes of these problems are the chemical compounds of the preservatives and the salt content of the processed meats.
Avoid processed meats in order to prevent heart disease and diabetes. People who eat one or less serving of processed meats were found to have less risk of developing those problems. The review was taken from 1,600 global studies to find a connection between eating different kinds of meat and the risks. Processed meat was defined to be any meat preserved by curing, smoking, salting, or adding chemical preservatives. Many bacon, sausages, salami, hot dogs, and luncheon meats go under this specification. Unprocessed red meats include lamb, beef, and pork, but not poultry.
The study found that eating 1.8 oz (50g) of processed meats daily (equivalent to one hot dog or 1-2 slices of deli meats) was linked to 42% higher chance of cardiovascular disease and 19% increased risk of diabetes development. Those who ate unprocessed red meats did not have any higher risks even though the average nutrients in both kinds of meats contained similar amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat. The only difference was that processed meats had 4 times more sodium and 50% more nitrate preservatives.
