Studies now show that Vitamin B (folate and B-6) has the potential to decrease heart risks in both men and women. The study consisted of around 23,000 men and 35,500 women ages 40 to 79 who took food frequency questionnaires that monitored the folate, vitamin B-6, and B-12 intakes. After a follow-up of 14 years, 986 died from stroke, 424 from heart disease, and 2,087 from other cardiovascular disease.
Those who took the highest amount of folate and Vitamin B-6 were found to have much less deaths from heart problems for men and deaths from stroke and cardiovascular diseases for women. Vitamin B-12 did not affect the rate of death. When the researchers adjusted their study for other risk factors or when they got rid of supplement users from the analysis, the results did not change much. Folate and Vitamin B-6 help protect the heart by decreasing homocysteine levels.
Homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood, can be broken down by Vitamin B and Folic Acid. Diet and genes also influence it. Other studies have shown homocysteine to hurt the arteries' inner lining, thus increasing the amount of blood clots. Folate can be foiund in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fbeans, legumes, and fortified cereals. Vitamin B-6 is found in fish, meats, liver, vegetables, whole grains, and fortified cereals.
