New studies show that regular sleeping times help children perform better academically. Those who go to bed at the same time every night score better on language, reading, and math tests compared to those who go to bed at different times. It was also found that the earlier the child slept, the better they did in school.
The study consisted of 8000 four year old children who were recommended to sleep 11 hours every night. Those who did not get the recommended hours usually fell behind in their studies. Those who slept consistently at the same time and those who slept at earlier hours had higher developmental scores.
Pediatricians should work with parents to ensure that their children go to bed with enough sleep. Children who sleep after 9pm usually fall asleep slower and have a shorter total sleep time. Children who sleep at irregular times also acquire less sleep.
