Genes Relate Olive Oil To Anti-Inflammation

New research now shows that olive oil has certain phenolic compounds that have been found to suppress genes that are connected to inflammation. This is the connection between olive oil and heart disease reduction. The Biomed Central (BMC) Genomics studied people who had metabolic syndrome and ate an olive-oil rich breakfast. Metabolic syndrome is usually related to other heart problems and diabetes.

Virgin olive oil is high in phenol elements that can reduce the genes that induces inflammation. That is why Mediterranean countries generally have lower risks of cardiovascular disease.

The study consisted of 20 metabolic syndrome patients. After a six-week detox period where the patients did not consume any vitamins, supplements, or drugs, half of the group was fed high (398 ppm) virgin olive oil-based breakfast and the other half low (70 ppm). The participants all had analogous carb rich, fat poor diet to reduce the number of factors that affect the results. Researchers followed 15,000 human genes during the after-meal times and found 79 genes that were underexpressed and 10 genes that were overexpressed by the high phenol oil. These genes are usually associated with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood-fat levels. In particular, the study found that 35 out of the 39 genes that play a role in inflammation were less active (or turned down) after a breakfast containing high-phenol virgin olive oil than after the breakfast containing low-phenol virgin olive oil.
