The international journal of Environmental Health has found that women who used the most household cleaning products had twice the risk of developing breast cancer compared to those who didn't use cleaners. The researchers interviewed 787 Massachusetts breast cancer patients and 721 women without breast cancer all aged 60-80 years old.
The women who reported to use the most cleaning products, air fresheners, mold and mildew control products had double the rate of breast cancer than those who used the least. A lot of pesticides, cleaners, and air fresheners have been shown to contain ingredients that could induce breast cancer development in animals. Some also contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that hypothetically influence the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cells.
Air fresheners contain hormone disruptors like synthetic musks and phthalates. They might also contain terpenes, which reacts with ozone in the air to create cancer-generators like benzene, styrene, and formaldehyde. The household cleaning industry was disapproving of the study and the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) called the study questionable and exaggerating in its conclusions. However, this study does raise interesting questions that need to be addressed with more light.
