We have grown up thinking that eight hours of sleep is the best amount that you could get to start off the day. However, the latest US study consisting of 30,000 adults has found that 7 hours of quality shut-eye every night brings ideal health. Those who sleep over or under 7 hours daily have been shown to have a higher chance of developing coronary heart disease.
Participants in the study who slept 9 or more hours a day had a 150% higher chance of developing cardiovascular diseases than those who slept 7 hours. In addition, adults under 60 who slept 5 hours or fewer had a 300% chance of contracting heart disease compared to those who sleep 7 hours.
Less sleep is linked with angina and too much sleep is connected
According to the researchers, short sleep duration is associated with angina, while both sleeping too little and too much are linked to heart attack and stroke. Results stayed the same even with different factors like sex, age, race, weight, health, and lifestyle. Although researchers do not know the exact reason why sleep affects heart disease, sleep has been known to affect metabolic and endocrine functions. Sleep deficiency can guide the way to higher blood pressure, weakened glucose tolerance, decreased insulin sensitivity, and hardening of arteries.
