Do Most Americans Exercise?

A new study shows that only 5% of American adults are physically active-running, biking, or strength training-on any given day. The American Time Use Survey, a national phone-based poll, asked around 80,000 people above age 20 about their former day's events.

95.6% of answerers reported inactive movements like drinking and eating. 80.1% watched TV or movies. 78.9% participated in light activities like dressing, showering, and grooming. 71.4% drove around in a car, motorcycle, or truck. 25.7% of respondents were involved in moderate activities like food preparation. 10.6% cared for their garden, lawn, and plants. What is discouraging is that only 5% were found to participate in vigorous physical exercises. That includes the 1.1% who run and the 2.2% who use heart exercise equipment.

It is therefore reasonable to say that most American adults do not usually exercise, but actually only perform sedentary and light exercises. Even their moderate movements are for preparation of more food.
