A new British study shows that elderly people who take daily large doses of Vitamin B can decrease the rate of brain contraction by 50% and might even decelerate the advancement of dementia. Mild cognitive impairment is a prime risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The scientists at Oxford University hope that this harmless supplementation can hinder the occurrence of Alzheimer's in those who are troubled with mild memory troubles.
Around 16% of people over age 70 in the world are affected by Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which is characterized by minor loss of memory, language, or other mental functions. Roughly half of the people identified with MCI tend to go on and be stricken with Alzheimer's disease within five years.
168 MCI participants took part in a study where they were given either a pill containing very high doses of folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6, or a placebo pill. Vitamin B has previously been known to manage levels of homocysteine in the blood. High blood homocysteine levels are linked to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The drugs that were given to the pariticpants contained very high doses of Vitamin B: around 300 times the recommended daily intake of Vitamin B12, 15 times the recommended about of B6, and quadruple the daily advised folate levels. The researchers took brain scans in the beginning and at the end of the study to oversee the rate of brain atrophy. Results showed that the brains of those who took the supplements shrank at a rate of 0.76% a year and the brains of those who took the placebo shrank at a rate of 1.08%. They also found that the elders who had the highest levels of homocysteine at the start of the trial had the most benefits, where their brains shranka t half the rate of those who took the placebo.
