A recent Japanese study has found that consuming a large amount of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers may cut heart disease risk. The study consisted of around 23,000 Japanese men and 35,500 Japanese women aged 40-79 years without medical backgrounds of cardiovascular disease or strokes. Participants filled out a 40-item food frequency survey and had their insoluble, soluble, and total dietary fiber and nutrient intake levels approximated in the beginning of the study. They were then separated into five different groups depending on their estimated daily consumption of dietary fiber.
After 14 years of follow up, it was found that those who consumed the most fiber had 18% less chance of dying from heart disease compared to those who consumed the least amount of fiber. Men and women who ate the most fruit fiber had 58% and 45% respectively less risk of dying from coronary heart disease. The highest amount of fiber taken was a median of 14 grams per day.
Other variables might have accounted for the correlation. Those in the high fiber intake group usually have better general diets, better education, drink less alcohol and smoke, and exercise more. In addition, people might have changed their diets over the time period of the study, therefore affecting the results. However, researchers do emphasize the importance of fiber in protecting the heart against disease.
