New US studies show that kids nowadays do not drink enough water. Inadequate hydration can alter physiological activities and lead to dry mouth, headaches, fatigue, and muscle frailty. Dehydration was also connected to impaired cognitive and mental performance.
The study analyzed around 4,000 children (aged 2-19) from 2005-2006. The researchers observed that different age groups had different amounts of water intake. Depending on age, only 15-60% of boys and 10-54% of girls drank the minimum volume of water recommended by the U.S. Institute of Medicine. The researchers found that most children acquire their water through sweetened drinks instead of water. 2/3rd of water consumption would be from beverages taken with meals while 1/3rd would be from plain water taken with meals.
However, those who drank the most plain water would drink less sweetened beverages and eat fewer fatty foods. As the children grew, they would drink less nutritive beverages like milk and drink more plain water. Water is 55-75% of total body weight. As humans' bodies cannot stockpile water, they cannot go without water for more than a few days. It is very important to replenish the water that our bodies lose daily. The best way to keep children healthy is to give them water to drink instead of sugary drinks. It might help to put cucumbers, lemons, oranges, or strawberries in ice water to make it taste better.
