According to new research, LDL, infamously known as “bad” cholesterol, may inhibit the breakdown of fat in adipocytes. This finding suggests that LDL is a regulator of fat stores in your body.
Previous research has already shown that synthesis of LDL precursors can be increased by releasing fatty acids from adipocytes. On top of that however, researchers from the Karolinska Institute have now found that LDL cholesterol also slows the rate of lipolysis in adipocytes. Lipolysis is the process of fat breakdown.
Researchers suggest that these two findings represent a link between the liver and peripheral fat in the regulation of fat turnover. They also suggest that statins, which are drugs that lower LDL cholesterol, may promote the break down of fat stores.
