My Opinion
Free Radicals
Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with odd (unpaired) numbers of electrons. They can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Their chief danger comes from the damage they do when reacting with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs.

FAQ
Q: My doctor is about to start my estrogen replacement therapy and I have high cholesterol level (high in total cholesterol, low in HDL, high in LDL). My triglyceride level is normal. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Oral synthetic estrogen like Premarin has a more immediate and pronounced effect on your lipid profile compared to natural estrogens. Natural progesterone also has a less opposing effect on estrogen compared to synthetic progesterone like Provera. You may therefore want to consider starting on synthetic estrogen and natural progesterone for a while until your lipid profile improves. Thereafter, you can consider natural estrogen.

Quote of the Week
Our body is a machine for living. It is organized for that, it is its nature. Let life go on in it unhindered and let it defend itself, it will do more than if you paralyze it by encumbering it with remedies. ~Leo Tolstoy

Modern medicine has turned the practice of medicine into a protocol system - a repair shop where symptoms are checked off and treated. I wish it were so simple! Our body is not a light switch that can be turned on and off at will. It is a perfectly designed closed system that should not be manipulated with unless there is no choice. When you touch one end of a closed system, another part is affected. If we don't pay attention to the whole system, but just keep "repairing" the damaged part, we eventually cause the entire system to collapse. This is the sad state of modern medicine - treat an illness by eliminating the symptoms. My article: My Doctor is Killing Me is a good place to start understanding your own health

That's A Good Question!
Question: I am taking natural meds for thyroid and adrenal problems. I have run out of medicine for one month and unable to buy more until December. In the mean time I have been prescribed an antibiotic Doxycycl Hyc 100mg because of a tick bite for precautions. I found the tick on me and a big red area around the tick but no bull's eye yet. Anyway, now I am itching like crazy on the top of my head and losing lots of hair "daily". Why would I be losing so much hair? Could it be related to my already diagnosed ailments? Also, I get pain (with itching) on the head and in different areas of my body. It feels like hundreds of needle pricks, almost painful and uncomfortable. Please help. Mary W

Answer: Tick bites may seem to be a small thing to people, but for those who are already compromised internally; it could have a lot of unpleasant side effects.

Let me give you a bit of background on Adrenals first. Adrenal fatigue can often lead to excessive cortisol production. This in turn can create a state of end-organ resistance. Nearly all other hormones such as insulin, progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone can be affected.  As a result, sugar can become imbalanced, thyroid hormones can become less effective, blood pressure regulation may become hard to regulate, and menstrual flow can become irregular. Frequent symptoms may include fatigue, insomnia, digestive irregularity, infection, depression, brain fog, joint pain, and muscle tenderness.

That is why adrenal fatigue, when left unattended for a long time, makes you feel so rotten, like a slow-motion train wreck in progress. You feel lousy all day.  Any serious attempt to resolve the many symptoms can be fruitless unless the adrenals are attended to concurrently.

How is this related to hair loss? Well, what happens in women's hair loss is often and invariably tied to excessive testosterone (the male hormone). When your body doesn't have strong adrenals, the estrogen goes up, and some of it is internally converted into testosterone, thus the hair loss. There are other reasons as well, but this is the most common. Some antibiotics can put further stress loads to the body as well, and that can compromise your adrenal function. The good news is that once your adrenal is optimized, many of these symptoms do subside.

My article on Hypothyroidism is a must read for you.

That's A Good Question!
Question: During a 6-hour narcosis (Liver transplant), due to too little oxygen, I suffered some damage to my sight nerve from the sight center is damaged. This happened 2 weeks ago. One eye has no sight, one has clouded tunnel vision. Is there any hope of improvement?

Answer: Unfortunately, nerve damage due to impaired oxygenation is generally irreparable. Once the nerve dies, regeneration is very slow if ever happens. There is lots of research in this area, and I believe in a decade or so, there will be the ability to have the technology to grow the nerve back. This problem happens to a lot of stroke patients.
