Rice Paper Wrap
Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years both as food and for medicinal purposes. They are rich in potassium, riboflavin, niacin and selenium. Lentinan, a beta-glucan isolated from the fruiting body of shiitake mushrooms, appears to stimulate the immune system, helps fight infection, and demonstrates anti-tumor activity.

FAQ
Q: Should I have an exercise buddy?

A: If you have someone that you can exercise together with, that is wonderful. Try not to rely on one because if you do, you may not go through your routine if he or she is not around. Spend your time educating yourself about fitness and exercise. Let knowledge be your best motivator.

From Our Readers
Dear Dr. Lam, I've read your articles with great interest and appreciation. By cutting carbs, eating celery, exercising more, and cutting salt, I've gone from 165lbs to 161lbs and from 150/90 to 115/68mgHg in two weeks. No doubt you've got it right, although as you point out it can depend on your history. Dave H

Quote of the Week
In order to change we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired. ~ Author Unknown

Being sick and tired is strong motivation of change for sure. Few people I know change because they “see the light”. Most of us change because we “feel the pain”. We are truly blessed that our body has a built in repair mechanism in place, if we give it a chance. Natural medicine is the most non-toxic way to help the body heal itself. Having been trained as a conventional medicine physician, I am so glad to switch to natural medicine, a field where I see real healing and real restoration of health among those who are sick. I want you to be the smart one – see the light. Thousands are doing it today. Read their success stories here.

That's A Good Question!
Question: I got a flu shot last Wednesday and since then have had headaches and nausea. If I stand up too quickly, I experience some dizziness. My blood pressure is 125/78 plus or minus a few points. The injection spot is not sore.

Answer: Common side effects of flu shots include fever, malaise, muscle aches. In adults, especially in the elderly, additional symptoms such as dizziness, headache can occur. I am glad to note that your blood pressure is good, as sometimes you can have both flu and cardiovascular side events occurring side by side, with the flu shot side effects masking what may be underneath.

Severe side effects are very rare, but can include Guillain-Barre Syndrome. I dont think you need to worry about it. Watch for additional serious problems, like wheezing, hives, paleness, and fast heart beat.

Your symptoms should be resolving by itself over time, most likely over the next 2-3 days. If not, contact your doctor.

That's A Good Question!
Question: For a healthy almost 57 year old woman with low blood pressure, weighing 106 lbs., what is the maximum allowable dosage for the purpose of trying to recapture memory? My short term memory isn't bad. However, I find that I entirely lose events that occurred from a few months to 6 or more years ago. Even if reminded, I simply cannot recall anything about the events. It is as though they never happened. I take good notes because I am a professional and my line of work requires a memory. I think that my short term memory has improved since taking Vitamin E daily, 1000 IU.

Answer: If you are in good health and not taking blood thinners and other meds, you can increase your Vitamin E to 2000 IU. Studies are underway now for up to 3000 IU in severe Alzheimer's Disease cases. Even better is membrane stabilization with high potency pharmaceutical grade liquid (low mercury) fish oil in large doses of 10-15 grams a day with active ingredient EPA/DHA.
