Green Bean Potato Pine Nuts Salad
Don't be afraid to use nutritious good oil in food preparation. When you don't heat the oil up, there is no change in the fat structure that causes free radical damages in the body. Having sufficient good fats in the diet also increases metabolism that will help with weight loss.
Potatoes' reputation as a high-carb food has removed them from the meals of many diet plans. But recent research has identified 60 different kinds of phytochemicals and vitamins in the skins of potatoes that are of great benefits to health.

From Our Readers
Dr Lam,
I had to take the time to write and say thank you for the life changing education and advice you have provided me. I was suffering with adrenal fatigue from an unhealthy lifestyle of stress levels that had me on the path to self destruction. I am a successful female contractor that was in the process of running my business while building my home when a serious of events caused me to be devastated. I was in a lawsuit, there was a death of an immediate family member, my husband relapsed into manic depression, I moved into a new house and had to sell the old, MY husband fell down the stairs and developed amnesia, I had an elective surgery that went very bad, my mother died in another state, and I went through a divorce. Life was overwhelming to me. I had a deep sense of my loss of strength and confidence to handle the smallest things. I went from successful business owner, serving on many boards, handling thousands a month in financial investments, to a splat on the floor.
I had to say all that to show you the degree of strength and stress I tolerated on a daily basis before I fell apart. I don't think I could ever function again. The sight of my desk overwhelmed me and I could hardly take care of myself when I discovered what was happening to me through your website. I understand from our conversations that I am not out of the woods, but I have to tell you that after three months, I can see light again. I feel good everyday and thank God for you. I am so much better and some days forget that I was ever as low as I was. I feel alive again and look forward to going all the way to total recovery. Thank you, thank you for your time and help. You were a Godsend to me.

Quote of the Week
If I'd known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. ~ Leon Eldred
Only 100 years ago, the average life expectancy was 46. Today, those living in developed countries can expect an average lifespan of 80 plus years (84 for women and 76 for men). Our children are expected to live well into their 90s. I am frequently asked by those who are sick if it is too late to repair their damaged body, and let me tell you, it is never too late. Of course, the earlier you start the better. Learning to take care of ourselves is a life-style decision that is driven by habits. Having good habits of regular exercise and eating balanced and healthy diets are best developed as a child.
I want you continue your good habits and to abandon those less desirable ones. For more about aging, read my article A Disease on Aging

That's A Good Question!
Question: I would like a list of foods (not commercial brands), such as grains, nuts, fruits, veggies, flax and phsyllium and the % of soluble and insoluble fiber that they each contain. What is the difference between phsyllium husk and whole seed, as far as whether or not it is soluble or insoluble? After a seed is milled, does that change?
Answer: Physillium husk is a bulk-forming laxative high in both fiber and mucilage. The physillium seeds contain around 10-30% mucilage. The laxative properties of physillium are due to the swelling of the husk when it comes in contact with water, which forms a gelatinous mass, softens and adds bulk to stools for easier elimination.
Flax seed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. About one-third of the fiber in flax seed is soluble, which is mucilage. Two-thirds of the fiber in flax seed is insoluble.

That's A Good Question!
Question:
I am a 67 year old woman who has osteoporosis and cannot figure out why. I have been on progesterone for 16 years---first the suppositories and some shots--and the last 5 years on the cream. I am extremely health conscious, eat a healthy diet, take the best supplements out there, walk every day, do yoga, some aerobics, and weight lifting. I am taking an excellent calcium/magnesium supplement. Presently, I am using Tri-Estrogen which my MD has me on--she is a no-drug doctor! Since it is an 80-10-10 estrogen balance, should I switch to more estradiol rather than 80% estriol, since that usually affects bone the most? I am not overweight, had a hysterectomy at age 31, ovaries removed at age 38, and feel that I need some estrogen. My MD put me on Zypan lately, and I have also been taking Biost along with 3-A Calcium. She said I could also take the calcium product from the health care company with which I am involved. It is a calcium/magnesium/zinc/Vit.D/protein/phosphorous/potassium product with fulvates to make it more bio available. Why is my body not absorbing it? What else can I do?
Answer: The key to stimulating osteoblast activities are:
- natural progesterone
- high dose of magnesium relative to calcium
- weight bearing exercise
- elimination of acidic and mineral bleeching diet
- avoidance of drugs that can be toxic to bone cells such as syntheticprogesterone.
It is hard over an email to fully understand your history, but perhaps you can take a step back and review your history over the years and try to make some sense out of it. The history usually paints a very good story and will lead you properly to the root cause. Changing to more estradiol is not recommended, as the increased risk in cancer is simply not worth it. Testosterone may help, and so can DHEA and some other supplementation. Your MD is not far off, but I wonder why you are not on natural progesterone cream at this time. You may not even need the Triest unless you are still symptomatic with menopausal symptoms. You may want to find out why and the overall strategy as the main objective. Your doctor should have the pieces of the puzzle figured, and a logical sequence of things to do to reverse your osteoporosis. It's not hard if you know what you are doing, and the most important thing to know is that bone growth is a dynamic process. Give your bones what it needs and it will grow, as long as you also concurrently remove the insults.
