FAQ
Q: What are the advantages of using dumbbells for strength training?
A: Dumbbells permit individualized and optimized alignment of joints, making the exercises both safer and more effective. Furthermore, with the dumbbells, you are exercising in a three dimensional environment (compared to a machine where it is more linear and two dimensional, so to say), and so your muscle workout is more complete and more real.
From Our Readers
Dr Lam,
I have just read your piece on Sugar and aging. I am a scientist (evolutionary Biology/Animal behavior) and was pleased to see both the clarity and care with which you approached this subject. I was especially pleased to see the detailed list of references at the end--an all too rare thing indeed online.

Quote of the Week
The... patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don't take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop. ~Quentin Regestein
My mission is to empower each one of you to take charge of your own health. Too often we think that responsibility belongs to our physicians. Well I have a surprise for you. No one is going to care more for your well being than yourself. Once you take control of your health, you will not be intimidated by doctors. You will become the captain of your own boat. The best patients are those who are educated, because the best decisions you can make is an informed decision.

That's A Good Question!
Question: What is your view on GNC brand vitamins? I've noticed that some folks do not think too highly of them, yet others swear by them.
Answer: GNC is good for the general public who is interested in prevention medicine and yet don't know where to get things. Those who are into nutritional therapy will not buy from GNC because is not designed for their best interests. If you are interested in just ordinary health maintenance, I would suggest Walmart etc. It is cheaper and the quality is not far off from GNC. You must remember that in a cocktail, the proper mix and balance is critical, not just throwing different bottles together. That is what makes anti-aging doctors professionals in their field.

That's A Good Question!
Question:
I like to eat a handful daily of mixed organic, raw nuts and seeds. I choose various kinds: brazil, almonds, filberts, walnuts, pecans, and sunflower seeds. I have read in various places that peanuts, pistachios and cashews should be avoided. Any reason? I know about the peanut/allergy connection, but what about the other two?
Answer: Peanuts are legumes not nuts. It does cause allergic reactions for some people. When moldy, it has a chemical called aflatoxin that can cause cancer.
Cashew nuts have higher percentages of saturated fats, so for people who are on diets and want to lower their cholesterol, cashew nuts should be taken in limited quantity.
As far as pistachios are concern, I am not aware of any harm in it.
All nuts should be soaked overnight to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors and activate other enzymes that aid in digestion.
