I don't have any questions, I just wanted to thank you for bringing life back to me.

I was so sick and now I am feeling as good as I did twenty years ago! It has been a long battle: no energy, aches and pains going from one Dr. to the next. They told me it was anything from arthritis to depression; they had me on steroids for three years... All behind me now!

I just don't know how to thank you. I think it would be wonderful if you could just be everywhere with your caring heart. Information and the real reason behind all of the bad, sick days that so many of us have had.

Sincerely, Jessica...@telusplanet.net

From My Kitchen
Spinach Fennel Soup
Fennel contains some phytonutrients such as rutin, Quercetin and various kaempferol glycosides that give it strong antioxidant activity. There is another phytonutrient compound in fennel, anethole-the primary component of its volatile oil. In animal studies, the anethole in fennel has repeatedly been shown to reduce inflammation and to help prevent the occurrence of cancer.

FAQ
Q: I am always rushing around like a mad dog. What can I do to slow down?

A: The first step towards being able to effectively prioritize is to realize that not everything needs to be treated as top priority. Weekly, plan what you are going to do the coming week. Daily in the evening, plan what you are going to do for the next day. Lay out clothing and the breakfast table before going to bed. Get the children's school bags all packed and ready to go. Plan to do certain chores regularly on certain days, get your gas every Sunday, and make a list of all the things you need weekly to buy at the supermarket. Planning goes a long way in reducing last minute stresses.

From Our Readers
Dr Lam,
I have just read your piece on Sugar and aging. I am a scientist (evolutionary Biology/Animal behavior) and was pleased to see both the clarity and care with which you approached this subject. I was especially pleased to see the detailed list of references at the end--an all too rare thing indeed online.

Quote of the Week
Sickness comes on horseback but departs on foot. ~Dutch Proverb, sometimes attributed to William C. Hazlitt

When we were young, we could shake off a cold in a few days. As we age, flu tends to stay around longer. Why? Because during the aging process, our defense mechanism is less robust. Our engine gets older with each day. The good news is that our body can be rejuvenated, if we give them the right nutrients. As a nutritionally oriented physician, I have seen many who have benefited from my nutritional program. I want you to have a strong body, so that whatever illnesses that come will go away quickly. Fortifying yourself with optimum doses of anti-aging supplement is an excellent start.

That's A Good Question!
Question: Does vitamin B-12 help prevent mosquito bites or, at least reduce the affect of bites? If B-12 isn't the answer, what is?

Answer: The use of B12 is mixed. You can try using B complex (50 to 100 mg a day), especially B1 (50 to 100 mg one to two times a day) and B12 (1,000 mcg a day) to prevent as well as a mosquito repellent. Vitamin C helps reduce histamine release, resulting in a milder reaction, and can be considered. Bromelain (250 to 500 mg four times a day between meals) is a proteolytic enzyme that has anti-inflammatory effects. All three when taken together as a "cocktail" can be helpful, but it is not 100%.
According to Joseph Conlon, technical advisor at the American Mosquito Control Association, ingested vitamin B-12 alone has not been shown to have any repellent effect on mosquitoes in controlled studies. Garlic has also failed to pass muster in this regard.

That's A Good Question!
Question: I'm looking into a water filter. I have read for years that distilled water is best. I grew up in a nutrition-oriented household and was reading Paul Bragg as a teenager. Now some, including you are saying that distilled water is not the best. I do not own a home right now so I can only have a counter-top filtering unit as opposed to an under-counter permanent unit. You mentioned so many types but I'm still confused. Do you have a specific brand you like? I can spend up to $500 or so. There are so many out there, it's mind boggling. What about the simple Britta and PUR filters that simply attach to the sink or use pitchers. Are they of any value or do they simply remove odor and taste? Having a few brands to investigate would ease my burden of looking at everything and not knowing what's best.

Answer: Distilled water is not good for long term consumption based on the acidic nature and demineralization that can occur with chronic long term use. Short term use is actually good for detoxification purposes. Depending on where you live, the kind of water filter you need varies. Generally speaking, you don't need to spend a lot of money. I see many people spend thousands of dollars to have a fancy machine. I tell them that if they just drink more water, the amount of flushing is better than the extra money for the fancy machines worth. A basic filter, however, should be in place. Most of one in the usd 100-150 price range is quite satisfactory in metropolitan areas because you are not so worried about bacterial contamination but more toxic metals removal. A good desk top filter with solid carbon block is a good beginning and start. Carbon granules are not as good. If you have more money, you can get into ceramics filters, but the difference is insignificant. I don't have a particular brand to recommend. As you say, there are many out there. You may wish to study my water article if not already done so. The other important thing to consider is to make sure you change the filter on a timely basis. Any filter is only as good as the filter itself, and each one has a life based on volume flow.
