FAQ
Q: I can over-exercise decrease longevity?

A: Over-exercising can have some negative effects on your longevity. A famous study of 17,000 Harvard alumni showed that those who exercised over 3,500 kilocalories a week had a slight increase in death rate as compared to the control group. Researchers postulate that over-exercise leads to an increase in cellular oxidation. This in turn leads to increased free radical formation, some of which can lead to cellular mutation and cancer.

From Our Readers
Dr Lam,
Dear Sir: I would like to start off by thanking you so much for the information you have provided. (I first found your site when I was searching out information about hyperthyroidism as it relates to diet and exercise. I felt my diet did not support my exercise routine. It was too low in calories). You have helped me so much with my medical problems. You have given me understanding to the problems, and helped me take charge of my treatment. I now can question the doctors on many of the things they tell me. I tell all my friends and family about your website it is so insightful. I like that you present studies that are up to date to support your opinions. I have been warning my friends and family about French fries and corn chips too. I see that has made the news. Again thank you for being a caring Doctor who has the well being of everyone who reads your website in mind at all times. Thank you so much! Joseph D

Quote of the Week
The longer I live, the less confidence I have in drugs and the greater is my confidence in the regulation and administration of diet and regimen. ~John Redman Coxe, 1800

Isn’t it amazing that what is true over 200 years ago is even truer today? The widespread and sometimes indiscriminate use of medicine under the cover of “science” is truly scary. Many scientific papers are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. Their conclusions are tainted. Statistics can lie but your body never lies, and your body is always right. Your body is constantly talking to you, sending you signals on what you should do. Pain is a signal that the body is communicating through to you. Until you listen, your body will continue to punish you. I want you to learn to listen to your body. And you can start by understanding the aging process.

That's A Good Question!
Question: My mom is a diabetic (over 35 years diabetic) and is tablet controlled. She also has a high cholesterol (heart) condition. We regularly buy salmon which is high in omega-3 fats for her. Is this ok? Also she loves avocado and I keep reading conflicting info that this is not good for her cholesterol. Is this correct?

Answer: Salmon is good, but unfortunately nowadays, it is laced with mercury unless you get the virgin Alaskan salmon. Mercury can lead to a host of other neurological problems when one gets older, including association with Alzheimer's Disease. In fact, fish is no longer recommended for those who are contemplating pregnancy to avoid passing onto the baby during pregnancy. I think moderation is ok for those over 45 years of age. 8 ounces a week is plenty. The smarter way is eat the fish in moderation, and supplement with pharmaceutical grade high potency fish oil that is high and has less than 1 part per billion heavy metal. Take one tsp two times a day together with polycosinal and gugulipid and cholesterol will normalize nicely.
Avocado is ok but don't overdo it. The correlation between diet cholesterol and blood cholesterol level is only about 15%. Most people are unaware of this. It’s ok to take, but in moderation if she already has high cholesterol.

That's A Good Question!
Question: I have been overweight since my first pregnancy. Before that I was very small and had a horrible 1st pregnancy. High blood pressure and my body did nothing on its own to have the baby so I had a c-section. I have dieted so many times and cannot even lose a pound. This has been going on for 17 years now. Other than my weight my life is perfect. I do try to exercise but being about 70 pounds overweight, I usually end up with something hurting. I am so embarrassed to go out in public and am so afraid to see someone I used to know when I was thin. My family doctor told me to do a protein only diet of 800 calories so I tried it and after about 3 days I was so light headed I could not walk. I am only big in my pregnant area - stomach-breast-face. I still have my bird legs. I have always had regular periods but horrible cramps. I do have at least 1 small cyst on my ovary. What about Cushing’s disease? If you have any advice, I would love to hear it from you. I am 44 yrs old now and would love to be able to tuck my shirt in one more time in this life time. Thank you in advance.

Answer: I can sympathize with your plight. Weight loss is one of the most difficult things to do. Most people fail because they try to do it too fast and do not have a thorough understanding of the mechanics behind obesity. It took you years to put on the weight gradually. Therefore, you must plan to lose your weight gradually, no more than ½ lb a week, and allow some rebounding to occur. Don’t forget that obesity is an addiction, much like to coffee or heroin. The difference is that the society approves of it. Inside the body, you crave food as signals from your brain can overwhelm your logic of refrain. The good news is that it can be overcome, and those who plan to do it over 1 -2 years generally have good results, while those who desire quick result usually fail. Now let us get down to the nitty gritty, so to say. Your 70 pounds overweight can be shed permanently. Plan to just shed 25 pounds over the next 12 months, or 2 pounds a month, or half pound per week.
