New Trends in Natural Products and Their Use as Part of the Adrenal Fatigue Supplements Regiment

Adrenal Fatigue supplements can have powerful effects but must be used carefully to not overload the body in Adrenal FatigueA new report from the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), a branch of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reveals adrenal fatigue supplements trends among adults have shifted since 2007.

The report was compiled from data collected using a complementary health questionnaire administered every five years as one part of a National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The NHIS is a study that is conducted every year during which thousands of American adults are surveyed regarding experiences related to health and illness. The 2012 survey is the latest comprehensive information on complementary health practices used by both adults and children in the United States.

Studies on Adrenal Fatigue Supplements Viability

The NCCIH collected data on nearly 89,000 American adults who were enrolled in the national health interview survey. Researchers at the center found that during the five years between 2007 and 2012, use of fish oil, prebiotics, probiotics, and melatonin increased. During the same time period, more adults began practicing yoga, tai chi, and qi gong. Overall, the report found that natural products (not including vitamin and mineral supplements) are among the most popular complementary health practices.

The data from the 2012 survey was compared with earlier surveys conducted in 2002 and 2007 in order to identify trends in the use of specific supplements.

Fish oil is a supplement that promotes balance in our body’s functions, and if used right can be a powerful member of the Adrenal Fatigue supplementsThe survey found fish oil to be the most popular natural product used by American adults. The study also found that the use of fish oil, prebiotics, probiotics, and melatonin rose during the previous five years. At the same time, American adults are using less glucosamine/chondroitin, echinacea, and garlic.

The use of fish oil for children was the most commonly used natural health product, replacing echinacea in the 2007 survey. Melatonin saw a sharp rise, becoming the second most commonly used product among children.

The survey is not designed to determine the reason behind these trends, but trends do seem to coincide with published research on the effectiveness of various products, according to Dr. Josephine P. Briggs, NCCIH director. Melatonin, for example, has recently been studied for its ability to help with sleep issues, while recent studies on echinacea’s effectiveness on colds have been conflicting.

Health trends aren’t limited to supplements, however. Participants were also asked about their use of complementary and alternative medicine such as yoga, tai chi, ayurveda, chiropractic, and other therapies. Use of complementary and alternative methods has increased. Yoga, tai chi, and qi gong in particular are enjoying increasing popularity.
The results of this most recent study are based on data from 88,962 adults, as well as interviews with 17,321 knowledgeable adults regarding children between the ages of four and 17.

The data from these surveys are generally consistent with nationwide sales data from the same time. The sales data independently confirms the data from the surveys, bolstering confidence in the survey results according to Richard L. Nahin, Ph.D., M.P.H, Senior advisor to the NCCIH for scientific coordination and outreach.

These results are more than simply interesting; they help shape research priorities in the area of natural health. Usage trends are one of four principles that guide the determination of products studied by the center. Survey results show how important it is to continue studying products that are being used frequently without the benefit of thorough study.

The rise of supplement use reflects largely to the failure of conventional medicine to keep up to date the RDA (recommended dietary allowance) of nutrients. Some Adrenal Fatigue supplements are naturally stimulating and should be avoided. The toolbox of Adrenal Fatigue supplements has remained the same, because the body has not changed. There are always “fashionable” supplements promoted as “miracle” nutrients by marketing companies. Do not follow these trends. Stay with the basics. Understand the physiology, and give the body non stimulatory compounds that nurture the adrenals back to health. The proper dosage, delivery system, and timing is key. Those who are weak can get worse with indiscriminate use and can experience adrenal crashes. Supplements for adrenal recovery need to be used judiciously and under proper supervision. Stay with what has been proven to work over the years. Those who are sensitive should stay away from glandulars and herbs. Vitamins C and B5 are commonly used, but high doses should be avoided unless under professional supervision.

In summary, many nutrients are important for their use as an adrenal fatigue supplement, and the guidance of an experienced clinician will yield the best results.

    I do suffer from adrenal fatigue and have been to two different naturopathic physicians, both of which have given me herbs and glandulars – all of which have made me “jacked up” and feeling much worse. I feel like I’m left with no other options and my adrenal fatigue is still a problem. Can you offer any other solutions?

    What do you think about Holy Basil? It seems to have more a calming effect on the imbalanced endocrine system. I’ve taken it for some days and my heart is pounding less in the evening and it has become easier to fall asleep.
