Benefits of Pomegranate for Your Brain

Polyphenols are essentially naturally occurring antioxidant chemical compounds. Recent research has come to the conclusion that punicalagin likely contains anti-inflammatory effects, meaning you can take advantage of these anti-inflammatory effects as part of the benefits of pomegranate.

Olumayokun Olajide and his co-workers, including four PhD students, from the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom have studied the anti-inflammatory effects prompted by punicalagin. The research team is drawn from the Department of Pharmacy and they worked alongside professionals from the University of Freiburg in Germany. Findings from the study were published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

Pomegranate and Alzheimer’s

This natural compound, which is found in the pomegranate fruit, appears to contribute to the health benefits of pomegranate to slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It also appears that it can curb the symptoms caused by this condition and other neurodegenerative diseases. This special compound might also be able to support some of the other issues that go along with these illnesses; Punicalagin may be able to reduce the inflammation associated with Parkinson’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which can be painful and lead to debilitating symptoms.

The discovery of punicalagin’s properties potentially heralds a new era of research into the development and use of drugs which could actually make a medical difference in such debilitating conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. There are around 800,000 individuals in the United Kingdom alone who suffer from Alzheimer’s, and every year another 163,000 new cases are diagnosed. Around the world, there are well over forty million people suffering from some form of dementia or mental decline. Unfortunately, this number is expected to continue rising.

Benefits of Pomegranate for Your Brain and Body

There are still a number of questions that need to be answered – primarily, the exact quantity of pomegranate needed to produce tangible results. Of course, there are still numerous health benefits of pomegranate which have been linked directly to the regular consumption.

Pomegranates and pomegranate juice, both of which convey health benefits of pomegranate.Among other benefits of pomegranate, eating them regularly can help prevent neuroinflammation, which is linked to dementia. It is recommended to consume juice products that contain pure pomegranate. In 100 percent pure pomegranate juice products, punicalagin should compose around 3% of the volume on average, which is what researchers believe to be responsible for slowing down the development of dementia.

Causes of Neurodegenerative Conditions

Chronic stress imposes many catastrophic and terrible health conditions on the human body. In order to cope with stress, the adrenal glands in the body release cortisol, the main stress response hormone. It is very important for your body to have a healthy balance of this hormone. Several studies have shown that too much cortisol, associated with chronic stress, can damage the hippocampus section of the brain. Those individuals suffering from neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s have been found to have higher levels of cortisol within their bloodstream than is thought to be healthy.

Stress, cortisol, and Alzheimer’s are all connected in an important way. It has been proven that those who live more stressful lives have a higher risk of developing neurodegenerative conditions. High levels of cortisol are linked to the onset and rapid development of Alzheimer’s. Similarly, cortisol has been linked to Parkinson’s. Hormones within the body all have important roles to play and oftentimes, when these hormones are at levels which are too high or too low, they can have dangerous consequences for the internal organs.

    Exposure to noxious chemicals on a regular basis has caused multiple symptoms and hardship for me for a good part of my adult life, especially in the past 5 years. Three years ago I was exposed to a continuously leaking natural gas stove. Pomegranates, exercise and fresh air gave tremendous relief. Once again, having lost my career and having to start over again, I moved to a humble, inexpensive place that had a sewer gas leak that has resulted in severe mobility impairment, mild cognitive issues and an abnormal Brain CT scan. While awaiting for further MRI information, I recalled how beneficial eating pomegranates had been a few years ago when exposed to the Stove gas leak. I can feel a difference in just one day. Pomegranates have been a powerful life saving addition to my diet.
