Homemade Shaving Cream: A Recipe for Avoiding Toxicity
When you think of health and how to take better care of yourself, you’re probably not thinking about shaving cream. That’s understandable, because typically in the realm of health and wellness, we mostly think about what is going into our bodies, and not what is touching our skin. That’s also why hygiene products containing toxic chemicals can pose such a large health risk. Enter natural homemade shaving cream, an excellent way to take better care of your body and protect your long-term health.
Why Make Your Own Hygiene Products?
There is a complete method for considering and managing your health, and it’s called the mind-body approach. This is key to understanding what you can and should do to keep yourself well. There will never be a single aspect of health that you can change to magically solve your health woes. However, considering all aspects of your life, including relationships, diet, lifestyle, beauty products, and recreation, can add up to make a big difference.
This is why homemade shaving cream and other natural substitutions have gained relevance over the years. A progression of companies trying to cost save ended up having unintended consequences, resulting in many toxic products. Luckily, we now know what is in a lot of the hygiene products we use, and we can make the change to more simple and natural items.
The true reason homemade shaving cream matters is that the skin is the largest exposed surface area of the body, and it absorbs everything that it touches. When we put damaging toxins into our bodies through beauty products like moisturizers, makeup, and fragrances, it has an inevitable effect on the way we feel and how we operate on a day to day basis.
Toxic Exposure and Stress
Applying chemical-laden products to the skin has long-term effects and complications, especially if you are experiencing ongoing stress.
The body combats stress using a combination of systems throughout the body, so multiple areas are affected by the toxic contact. The system the body uses for stress is called the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Stress Response. It is a complex network of signals and reactions that help the body cope during difficult times.
The NEM Stress Response begins in the brain, at the hypothalamus, then travels through to the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands. The glands enact a hormonal response to promote actionable measures to combat stress. If the NEM is not working properly, unaddressed stress can cause oxidative stress and damage to body tissues.
Stress and toxins both contribute to oxidative stress throughout the body. An internal environment of toxicity mixed with oxidative stress can cause cells to regenerate in an inferior manner or slowly die altogether.
This combination can cause extensive damage to the body and its functions, so it is important to focus on the things we can do to reduce oxidative stress. Homemade shaving cream may not be a complete solution to tackle toxicity issues, but it is a start.
When the NEM Stress Response is activated, the liver is called on to release energy and its detoxification function is not prioritized by the body. This tends to weaken the liver over time. Because the liver has such a large role in the detoxification process, chronic issues can develop when it is unable to function properly because of the increased burden placed on it during stress.
Recovering from Stress Naturally
A common affliction that is directly related to an overactive NEM Stress Response is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS).
AFS takes place when the adrenal glands, located on top of the kidneys, are overworked and unable to produce enough hormones to keep up with demand. The problems associated with this are fatigue, brain fog, inability to focus, and even chronic inflammation. Toxins add stress and make this condition worse. This is why you need to consider ways to reduce the toxic load on your body.
One of the best things that you can do to lessen the damage of stress and begin the recovery process is to use natural products. Whether they come from the store or you make them yourself, like in the case of homemade shaving cream, the focus should be lessening how many toxic chemicals enter your body.
When your body is able to more easily dispense of unwanted chemicals, your liver and kidneys will recover much more quickly. Since AFS already puts tremendous pressure on the liver, anything else you can do to lower its workload will help with stress recovery. Combating stress can be very difficult for many of us, and a multi-angle approach to recovery is the best way to create slow but effective change.
Focus on Yourself and Get Healthy
It’s not uncommon for people who are extremely stressed not to take the time to look at what they can do to help themselves. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of life and forget to service the machine that gets things done for you – the body.
However, doing things at home that you know are beneficial for your health can make it easier to relax and slow down.
There are many ways that you can help yourself recover from AFS and chronic stress. This is only one suggestion among a sea of possible methods to help to move into recovery. If you are using homemade shaving cream or if you have other plans for decreasing the level of toxicity in your body, the important thing is that you are making an effort to get healthy.
If your body has reached a point where it can’t detoxify properly or respond to stress, it can be sensitive to changes, so if you have any concerns or have advanced stage AFS, please consult your healthcare professional to determine the best plan for you. Everyone is different, so the best course is always to look at what makes the most sense for you individually.
One thing that generally helps everyone, though, is taking time to focus on your health and wellness. Looking at simple things you can do can help you improve a little more each day eventually adds up to reaching your health goals.
