Q: I am post menopausal and have a blood test showing a low ferritin level. My doctor recommended that I go onto Iron supplementation. I have heard that Iron is a pro-oxidant. Should I take the supplement?
A: Many people are scared of taking iron supplement because of its pro-oxidant effect, and rightly so. However, if your ferritin level is low and you are having symptoms consistent with iron deficiency anemia, then it is wise for you to get iron supplementation until you have built your oxygen carrying capacity up. To overcome the pro-oxidant effect, take extra antioxidants during the time you are on iron supplementation. Also note that iron supplements often cause constipation. Taking digestive enzymes and soluble fibers will help in this respect.
